A 23-day guided 4x4 self-drive expedition from Botswana across the Caprivi Strip into Northern Namibia

A fully guided frontier overland expedition crossing five scenic river-wetlands, from the elephant-rich Chobe to the remote deserts of the Kaokoveld.
About This Tour
Tour Dates: 16 February – 23 March 2027
This 23-day guided expedition delivers a masterclass in frontier overlanding across the legendary landscapes of Botswana, the Caprivi Strip, and Northern Namibia. Beginning in the vibrant gateway of Johannesburg and concluding in the capital city of Windhoek, this itinerary is purpose-built for travellers seeking a profound connection with raw wilderness, challenging 4x4 tracks, and diverse African cultures.
The journey traverses the untamed South African and Botswana wilderness, crossing five of the continent's most scenic river-wetlands: the Chobe, Zambezi, Kwando, Kavango, and Kunene Rivers. From the elephant-rich waterholes of the Chobe National Park to the rugged mountain gorges and dry riverbeds of the Kaokoveld, this expedition offers an unparalleled opportunity to navigate deep bushveld and remote desert frontiers. After exploring ancient rock art in the Brandberg and experiencing the coastal charm of Swakopmund, the tour culminates in a scenic return to Windhoek—completing one of the most immersive 4x4-dream tours available.
Please note: The tour price shown excludes 4x4 vehicle and rooftop tent hire. Please visit the 'Your 4x4' tab to review our fleet, and we will prepare a comprehensive, all-inclusive quote for your final approval before you book.
Health & Safety Note: Malaria Precautions Since our route takes us through wild river-wetlands and pristine wilderness areas, parts of Botswana and Namibia are classified as malaria risk areas. We highly recommend taking precautions. Please consult your doctor or a travel clinic well in advance of our departure on 16 February to get the best advice on prophylaxis and prevention.

This safari takes us through pristine wilderness that includes five of the most scenic river-wetlands: the Chobe, Zambezi, Kwando, Kavango and Kunene Rivers. Adventure is guaranteed amid this natural splendour, with such a variety of landscapes that it will surely challenge your outdoor appetite — it is truly a 4x4 dream tour!
Day 1 | 16 February: Johannesburg to the Tuli Block, Botswana
You arrive at O.R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, on 15 February and stay at the Sunrock Guesthouse, a great spot close to the airport (settled on arrival); the Sunrock Shuttle collects you at the airport and I will meet you at the guesthouse. The next morning (16 February), after breakfast, we set off in fully equipped, rented 4x4 off-road vehicles heading directly for the Tuli Block in Botswana — roughly a 6-hour drive to the border. We enter Botswana at the Platjan Border Post, crossing the Limpopo River, and camp for 2 nights at the Limpopo River Lodge, shaded by huge Leadwood and Nyala Berry trees. (Breakfast and dinner included) (±580 km)
Day 2 | 17 February: Tuli Block Exploration
Today you spend time in the bush — some game driving, a walk down to the Limpopo River bed, and sundowners overlooking the river area. Enjoy a relaxing evening around a huge campfire. Camp at Limpopo River Lodge. (All meals included)
Day 3 | 18 February: Woodlands, near Francistown
From here we head for our next stopover, Woodlands, situated near Francistown — a lovely place with grass-covered gardens and a nice swimming pool. Stay in comfortable campsite-chalets. (Breakfast and dinner included — buy lunch along the way) (320 km)

Day 4 | 19 February: Elephant Sands
After a good breakfast we head to Francistown for lunch at the Wimpy. Our official safari starts at Elephant Sands — a camp beside a waterhole where elephants rule! Great facilities, a nice pub and a relaxed area overlooking the waterhole. Here you stay in luxury safari tents. (Breakfast and dinner included) (410 km)
Day 5 & 6 | 20-21 February: Kasane, Chobe River & Victoria Falls
Today we travel to Kasane, the gateway to Chobe National Park, and camp at Thebe Safari Lodge close to the Chobe River. Lunch at the restaurant is for your own account, after which you enjoy a 3-hour sundowner cruise on the Chobe River — an exciting afternoon getting close to crocodiles and hippos, with stunning views of the sun setting over the mighty Chobe. On Day 6 you can visit the Victoria Falls in neighbouring Zimbabwe, 90 km away, leaving by bus for a day-trip at 07:30 (a visa is issued at the border, ±US$30 per person) and returning to the lodge by 16:30. (Breakfast and dinner included) (300 km)

Day 7 & 8 | 22-23 February: Chobe National Park (Ihaha Camp)
From today we visit the famous Chobe National Park, setting up camp at Ihaha Camp for 2 nights on the edge of the Chobe River — one of the numerous highlights of this special experience. We look forward to encounters with thousands of elephants and the interaction between lions, hyenas, buffaloes and numerous antelopes. The birdlife is excellent, and this is, of course, popular leopard country too! (All meals included) (120 km)
Day 9 & 10 | 24-25 February: Into Namibia — Katima Mulilo & the Zambezi
After breakfast we leave for Namibia, crossing the border at Ngoma Bridge. Our next stop is Katima Mulilo, where we camp at Namwi Island Campsite on the edge of the Great Zambezi River. We can book a boat cruise, or you can go tiger fishing (optional extras). (Breakfast and dinner included) (120 km)
Day 11 & 12 | 26-27 February: Central Caprivi & Camp Kwando
From here we explore the central part of the Caprivi. Our overnight spot is Camp Kwando, with the most beautiful scenes over the Kwando floodplains. We can take a quick drive through the wild Nkasa Rupara National Park — true 4x4 country. (All meals included) (160 km)

Day 13 & 14 | 28-29 February: Kavango River & Ngepi
After a healthy breakfast it is time to discover another highlight on the banks of the Kavango River: Ngepi. 'Get a life... or dream on!' — their slogan says it all. Camp here for 2 nights. We visit the old 32 Battalion base camp as well as the nearby Mahango National Park. Ngepi is a great place to spend these 2 nights. (Breakfast and dinner included) (180 km)

Day 15 | 1 March: Rundu & Taranga Lodge on the Okavango
Now we head to the Rundu area to do some shopping, then drive to the beautiful Taranga Lodge, where we camp for the night right on the edge of the Okavango. Enjoy the breathtaking sunset from the floating pub. (Breakfast and dinner included) (260 km)

Day 16 | 2 March: Kunene River Lodge
Leave early morning for the exciting Kunene River Lodge — an amazing setting on the Kunene River. The road leads us all along the river with stunning views. (Breakfast and dinner included)

Day 17 & 18 | 3-4 March: Epupa Falls & the Kaokoveld
Today we follow the Kunene River all the way to the magnificent Epupa Falls, the most north-westerly point of the Kaokoveld — an amazing place! Camp for 2 nights and enjoy the breathtaking views over the falls and the stunning landscapes. Here you can also visit a Himba kraal with a local guide; these semi-nomadic, pastoral people with their ochre-skinned beauty live in simple villages, mostly subsisting as goat and cattle herders. (Breakfast and dinner included) (80 km)
Day 19 | 5 March: Kaokoveld to Khowarib Lodge
From here we enter one of the last wilderness areas in southern Africa: the Kaokoveld, in the extreme north-west of Namibia. Today we head back toward the capital, Windhoek, camping en route at Khowarib Lodge. We drive through dramatic landscapes, cross dry river beds and traverse tree-covered, rocky tracks, stopping for lunch under a huge Ana tree (Anaboom). (All meals included) (160 km)

Day 20 | 6 March: Brandberg & the White Lady
From here we visit the magnificent Brandberg, with its world-renowned Bushmen rock art of the White Lady. A fresh 3 km walk takes us there; this area is also known for desert elephants and lions. You stay at the White Lady Lodge for the night.
Day 21 & 22 | 7-8 March: Swakopmund
We conclude our expedition in style at Swakopmund, camping with excellent facilities. The road tests your patience, with river crossings and long stretches of driving in the river beds, guarded by mountains and gorges. Swakopmund was the seat of the earlier German Imperial Government, whose succession of extravagant buildings today form one of the best-preserved collections of German colonial architecture still standing; it is also Namibia's premier holiday resort. Enjoy a day of shopping, fishing, 4x4-ing / quad-biking on the huge dunes, or a camel ride. Stay at Alte Brücke, which has beautiful facilities. On the last evening we all enjoy dinner at a great restaurant overlooking the ocean (for your own account). (Breakfasts included) (±320 km)
Day 23 | 9 March: Return to Windhoek
Today we drive back to Windhoek, from where you fly back to Europe.

- •Pack in modules: clothes cube / toiletries pouch / med kit / tech kit.
- •Keep a grab bag in the vehicle: hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, water, camera / binoculars.
- •Always carry one warm layer even in hot months — early mornings and desert nights can be cold.
- •Pack duplicates of mission-critical items (one spare cable, one spare headlamp battery set, etc.).
- •Keep medicines and documents in a dust-proof pouch and away from heat.
- •If entering malaria-risk regions, get personalised medical advice before travel. You will be advised in your tour programme if it is required.
Seasonal Packing Guide
Seasons vary by region — use this as a practical rule-of-thumb when packing outside the rainy season.
| Category | Summer (hotter, more insects) | Winter (colder nights, drier air) |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing | More quick-dry tops; extra light long-sleeves for sun/insects; breathable hat. | Add a warmer fleece; extra long pants; consider a beanie for early mornings. |
| Sleeping gear | Lighter sleeping bag or sheet + liner; ventilation-friendly sleepwear. | Warmer sleeping bag/liner; thermal base layer; hot-water bottle (optional). |
| Insect protection | Stronger repellent; consider a light long-sleeve camp shirt for evenings. | Still carry repellent; insects can remain in milder winter areas. |
| Hydration | Extra electrolytes; 1–2 bottles for day use; aim for regular sipping. | Don't underestimate dehydration — dry air and campfires can dry you out. |
| Sun & dust | Sunscreen top-ups; sunglasses; buff for dust and wind. | Same essentials; add moisturiser/lip balm as air is drier. |
| Footwear | Breathable shoes; camp sandals for heat. | Closed shoes for cold mornings; thicker socks. |
| Camp comfort | Cooling spray bottle; lighter gloves optional. | Gloves recommended; extra warm layer for sitting around the fire. |
