Day-by-Day Itinerary
Ready to combine untamed safari adventure with tropical island fun? Look no further than Zimbabwe and Mozambique. This incredible journey takes you deep into Zimbabwe's Gonarezhou National Park, a remote wilderness that lives up to its name: 'place of the elephant.' Here, you'll explore a stunning landscape of river floodplains, hidden lagoons, and forests of giant mahogany and ebony trees, all while surrounded by Zimbabwe's most diverse birdlife. Then, we head to Mozambique to dial up the fun with golden beaches and unforgettable ocean experiences. Using the coastal town of Vilanculos as our launchpad, we will venture into the breathtaking Bazaruto Archipelago for a day of island hopping, sunshine, and incredible snorkeling on vibrant coral reefs.
Day 1: 18 July โ Johannesburg to Kruger
After breakfast we leave for Kruger National Park. Tonight we camp close to Phalaborwa and the entrance of the Park. Discuss the programme details around the campfire and enjoy a healthy Quo Vadis dinner! (Breakfast and dinner included)
Day 2: 19 July โ Kruger National Park
Our adventure starts today with a visit to Kruger. After paying our entry fees at the Gate, we follow the route to our camp at Shingwedzi โ it will be a slow, relaxed, enjoyable drive, looking for animals. We stop at Letaba and Mopani camps, where you can buy something to eat. (Breakfast and dinner included) 160km
Day 3: 20 July โ Kruger to Mozambique
Today we enjoy a day-long game drive through the Park, on our way to Mozambique via the Pafuri Border Post in the north-eastern corner of the Park. We complete the border procedures and tonight we stay in comfortable safari tents at Dumela Lodge โ 8km from the border. Beautiful venue with huge trees, close to the Limpopo River. (Breakfast and dinner included) 120km
Day 4: 21 July โ Limpopo Crossing to Gonarezhou
Today we cross the Limpopo River. If the level is still high, we take a detour down to Mapai, where a ferry takes us across โ exciting stuff! A little bush track leads us down to Mapai through a beautiful environment with huge baobab trees, all along the Limpopo River โ about 70km to the ferry. After the crossing, we head to Gonarezhou National Park ('place of the elephant') in Zimbabwe. From the ferry it is about 15km to the tar road leading to the Zimbabwe border at Sango โ immediately after the border we enter the Park, and another 35km gravel road takes us to Swimuwini Lodge for the night. (Breakfast and dinner included)

Day 5: 22 July โ Chilojo Cliffs Wilderness Camp
Another eventful day awaits us โ after a bush breakfast we follow the 4x4 route to Chilojo Cliffs. We navigate a remote, sandy track where we also cross the Runde River. This is where we have our own piece of wilderness โ camping with minimal facilities, but it is all about location โ on the banks of the Runde River, with an absolutely stunning view of the Chilojo Cliffs, especially at sunset! (Breakfast and dinner included) 120km
Days 6 & 7: 23โ24 July โ Chipinda Pools
After breakfast we head for the main entrance to Gonarezhou, where we camp for two nights at the amazing Chipinda Pools, overlooking the Runde River, where the hippos, crocs and elephants keep us company. From here we explore the rest of the Park. This beautiful landscape with its wildlife is always a great experience. (Breakfast and dinner included) 80km

Day 8: 25 July โ Gonarezhou to Bush Camp
After this experience we turn back to Mozambique โ back through the Sango Border Post and down to Mapai, from where we take the track to Vilanculos. Be prepared for a bush camp for the night with no facilities โ it is the only road through the bush to the coast. It is safe and we will find an appropriate place to camp for the night and enjoy a real African bush experience around a huge campfire. (Breakfast and dinner included) 320km
Days 9, 10 & 11: 26โ28 July โ Vilanculos & Bazaruto Archipelago
Today we head further east towards the coast โ we reach Vilanculos later that afternoon. The following 3 nights we spend at the beautiful Archipelago Resort with its own private beach. We stay in large, stilted thatch cottages with full self-catering facilities โ there is also the excellent Vista do Mar Restaurant. From here we visit Magaruque Island with Dive Bazaruto charters โ this island forms part of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Here you can snorkel on the natural coral reefs with a healthy fish population โ warm and crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean. We also prepare a light lunch on the island. We explore the area and the town of Vilanculos, enjoying lunch at one of the restaurants (for own account) and the fish, seafood and of course the beach. (Breakfast and dinner included) 420km

Days 12 & 13: 29โ30 July โ Morrungula Beach
Now we move further south, all along the coastline of Mozambique. Our next destination is the beautiful resort of Morrungula โ here we camp underneath the coconut palms, next to the beach, where you walk out of your tent directly onto the sand. Here you enjoy the beach and the ocean and we prepare our seafood on the beach. Nice relaxing campsite with huge trees and good facilities โ camp 2 nights. (Breakfast and dinner included) 250km
Days 14 & 15: 31 July โ 1 August โ Guinjata Bay
The next two days are spent at Guinjata Bay on the other side of Inhambane, the capital of this area. Here we stay in Mozambican villas close to this beautiful beach. The nice beach bar and restaurant creates a special atmosphere where you can just relax, swim and enjoy a drink. You can book a deep-sea dive (SCUBA) experience, fishing charter, or sea safari on a boat where you can snorkel on the coral reefs and swim with the dolphins. (Breakfast and dinner included)

Day 16: 2 August โ Zona Braza
The last day in Mozambique is spent in luxury โ further south at Zona Braza. The setting is up on a dune, in a coastal forest, with stunning views from your villas, a few swimming pools, beach bar and nice restaurant. The beach stretches for kilometres in both directions โ very private with no other lodges or villages around. Our last night in Mozambique and we enjoy dinner at the restaurant (for own account). (Breakfast included) 250km
Day 17: 3 August โ Return to South Africa
After breakfast we drive back to South Africa via Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. Tonight we stay at a lodge near Mbombela (Nelspruit). (Breakfast included)
Day 18: 4 August โ Johannesburg Departure
Today we drive back to Johannesburg โ it all depends on your flight arrangements and what time your flight is. It is about 4 hours drive from Mbombela to OR Tambo Airport. You decide if you want to fly back on the 4th or the next day โ in which case you can stay over at Sunrock Guesthouse (for own account). (Breakfast included)

Seasonal Packing Guide
Seasons vary by region โ use this as a practical rule-of-thumb when packing outside the rainy season.
| Category | Summer (hotter, more insects) | Winter (colder nights, drier air) |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing | More quick-dry tops; extra light long-sleeves for sun/insects; breathable hat. | Add a warmer fleece; extra long pants; consider a beanie for early mornings. |
| Sleeping gear | Lighter sleeping bag or sheet + liner; ventilation-friendly sleepwear. | Warmer sleeping bag/liner; thermal base layer; hot-water bottle (optional). |
| Insect protection | Stronger repellent; consider a light long-sleeve camp shirt for evenings. | Still carry repellent; insects can remain in milder winter areas. |
| Hydration | Extra electrolytes; 1โ2 bottles for day use; aim for regular sipping. | Don't underestimate dehydration โ dry air and campfires can dry you out. |
| Sun & dust | Sunscreen top-ups; sunglasses; buff for dust and wind. | Same essentials; add moisturiser/lip balm as air is drier. |
| Footwear | Breathable shoes; camp sandals for heat. | Closed shoes for cold mornings; thicker socks. |
| Camp comfort | Cooling spray bottle; lighter gloves optional. | Gloves recommended; extra warm layer for sitting around the fire. |
