About This Tour
This 9-day guided 4x4 self-drive expedition takes you through some of South Africa's most spectacular Western Cape landscapes, beginning and ending in the Cape Town area. This West Coast adventure showcases the dramatic Cederberg Wilderness Area, famous for its ancient rock formations, Bushmen rock art, and endemic vegetation that creates a landscape unlike anywhere else on Earth. A primary highlight of the itinerary is the raw mountain wilderness, where guests enjoy 5-star villas, navigate dramatic Cederberg passes, camp, and hike challenging trails before cooling down in crystal-clear pools.
The journey continues along the spectacular West Coast, where pristine white beaches meet the rugged coastline of the cold Atlantic Ocean. A core highlight of this leg is the Namakwa National Park coastal camping experience at Kwas-se-Baai, where guests camp right on the beach, navigate deep sand tracks, and explore historical caves. Along the route, travellers will experience the unique charm of remote fishing and diamond towns, witness a massive seal colony, and sample fresh West Coast seafood. The expedition concludes with a legendary open-fire seafood feast at a famous outdoor restaurant near Lamberts Bay before returning to Cape Town.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Come and enjoy a few days in our own raw Cederberg wilderness โ with its gripping natural beauty and dramatic rock formations. The mountain range is named after the endangered Clanwilliam cedar (Widdringtonia wallichii), which is a tree endemic to the area. Enjoy the huge campfires under the star-studded night sky โ this is Africa at its best! From here we will move down to the coast for our West Coast experience! The most beautiful remote, natural area in the country โ also called the diamond coast โ because diamonds are still being mined here. We will experience some deep sand, insane sunsets, camping at our own private beach โ no one around! One of the best outdoor experiences in Southern Africa!
24 November. Arrive in Cape Town
Fly into Cape Town, South Africa. We will meet you at the Cape Town International Airport. Then we will collect your fully equipped rental 4x4-vehicles. After the briefing session we will accompany you to your guesthouse โ Somerset West. Your booked flights and arrival times will determine the detail arrangements, which we will share with you after bookings had been confirmed. You will book your own flights, and we will assist with the vehicle and guesthouse bookings.
25 November. Cape Town to Cederberg
We will meet at the Guesthouse at 10:00 โ from here we will drive via the scenic Bainskloof Pass to Ceres (the valley in which the town is situated is extremely fertile and is a major producer of South Africa's deciduous fruit). This will lead us to Cederberg Wilderness. Our first stop is at the picturesque Mount Ceder Mountain Resort. You will stay in 5-star self-catering villas, at the base of the majestic mountains โ and now we have reason to celebrate! Meals: Dinner included. Distance: 250km
26-27 November. Cederberg Exploration (2 nights)
After breakfast we will first visit the impressive Stadsaalgrotte (natural caves) and the nearby Bushmen rock paintings โ great photo opportunities. From here we will follow the panoramic route to the farm, Dwarsrivier and the Sanddrif Holiday Resort โ this is where we will find the Cederberg Wine Cellar and Cederberg Brewery โ the highest wine cellar above sea level in South Africa. Here we will taste and buy some wine and beer for the next few days โ they produce some of the best wines โ red and white โ and excellent craft beer. The owner, Dawid Nieuwoudt represents the fifth generation of the Nieuwoudt family. We will camp here for 2 nights. Once we arrive at the campsite situated on the farm, we will pitch our tents on a lovely grass campsite, next the tranquil Matjies River, with trees that provide shade for those hot afternoons. From here we will explore this unspoilt heart of the Cederberg โ first we will hike up the mountain to the breathtaking and famous Wolfberg Cracks โ quite a challenging climb โ but absolutely worth-while! Back at camp โ where we will take a breather and then we will stroll down to the Maalgat Pools โ here we will cool down in the crystal-clear mountain waters โ between the rocks. Remember it is summertime! Tonight we will once again relax round a huge campfire, where your food will also be prepared. Meals: Breakfast, light lunch and dinner included. Distance: 65km
28-29 November. Namakwa National Park (2 nights)
Start off with a good breakfast โ then we will be on our way to the coast โ first we must negotiate the Uitkyk- and Nieuwoudt Passes โ gravel road, but endless vistas of the unique Cederberg mountains. Then we will follow the N7 โ main tar road to the town of Bitterfontein โ there we will refuel the vehicles and drive down to the coast โ Groenrivier Mouth โ this is where the Namakwa National Park is situated. First, we have to check in at reception โ this is the heart of the succulent Karoo โ a real gem that offers some breathtaking coastal camping experiences โ exciting 4x4-sand driving and views of the coast and little bays that you won't find elsewhere! Here we will camp for two nights at Kwas-se-Baai โ with its beautiful view over the bay and the beach. We will harvest some mussels while enjoying the sea, sun and beach! There are only clean enviro-toilets available at this site โ but no water. We will provide the basics. We will also visit the nearby seal colony of 6000-plus and the Spoegrivier Cave, where the Khoi-people lived 2800 years ago. Sitting round a huge fire with your feet in the sand and sipping the best of our South African wines โ while your hosts prepare the dinner right in front of you โ that is life! Meals: Breakfast, light lunch and dinner included. Distance: 450km
30 November. Wild Camping at Sout River
Today we will follow the road south, all along the coastline towards our next camp โ near the Sout River mouth. This is wild camping โ no facilities โ and we must take everything from water to toiletries, food and firewood. This will be the best Africa-experience ever! You will enjoy the 4x4-driving โ sand and sand... feel the sand beneath your feet and embrace the remoteness and stunning sunsets. Meals: Breakfast, light lunch and dinner included. Distance: 80km
1 December. Doringbaai
Today, the real West Coast will show its colours! We will follow the last part of the sandy coastal road and then we will stop at Lutzville โ to fill up with fuel, drinks, ice and fresh produce. Then we will drive down to the little diamond town of Doringbaai, with a โ compulsory โ stop at Fryers Cove for a few drinks and a light snack โ beautiful restaurant and wine bar, situated in the classic old harbour. Our accommodation for the night is just across the road. Thornbay Guesthouse, over-looking the ocean. Quo Vadis will then prepare your dinner โ with the ocean in the background! Meals: Breakfast, light lunch and dinner included. Distance: 90km
2 December. Muisbosskerm Seafood Feast
We will start off the final day with a good breakfast and then your guide will take you down on a scenic drive, with a few 4x4-obstacles, before we will continue to our last campsite. But it is not all over yet โ tonight we are in for a huge treat! We will camp the last evening at Malkoppan โ a few kilometers from Lamberts Bay. This campsite is situated within walking (crawling) distance from the famous Muisbosskerm โ certainly the most well-known outdoor restaurant in Africa. Here we will enjoy dinner โ a feast of seafood and other delicacies โ all being prepared on the open fires. Meals: Breakfast and dinner included. Distance: 60km
3 December. Return to Cape Town
Our last morning together will start with freshly brewed coffee and then, after we have enjoyed breakfast, it will be time to leave for Cape Town โ about a 3 hour's drive. Seasonal Packing Guide
Seasons vary by region โ use this as a practical rule-of-thumb when packing outside the rainy season.
| Category | Summer (hotter, more insects) | Winter (colder nights, drier air) |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing | More quick-dry tops; extra light long-sleeves for sun/insects; breathable hat. | Add a warmer fleece; extra long pants; consider a beanie for early mornings. |
| Sleeping gear | Lighter sleeping bag or sheet + liner; ventilation-friendly sleepwear. | Warmer sleeping bag/liner; thermal base layer; hot-water bottle (optional). |
| Insect protection | Stronger repellent; consider a light long-sleeve camp shirt for evenings. | Still carry repellent; insects can remain in milder winter areas. |
| Hydration | Extra electrolytes; 1โ2 bottles for day use; aim for regular sipping. | Don't underestimate dehydration โ dry air and campfires can dry you out. |
| Sun & dust | Sunscreen top-ups; sunglasses; buff for dust and wind. | Same essentials; add moisturiser/lip balm as air is drier. |
| Footwear | Breathable shoes; camp sandals for heat. | Closed shoes for cold mornings; thicker socks. |
